Poem : “timeline of hope” - Jackie Huang

Updated: Nov 21, 2020

I EMERGING

Between the strands

of

golden doll hair

and

bright red jam

head

of glittery

rainbow

clips

They asked you what hope was

warm buttered toast

by

blazing firewood

You said;

‘Hope is to know every every

 single thing in the world”

II YOUNG

In rooms

bleached

with

lead

and

rubber

They asked you what hope was

Red ink

bled through

white chalk

You said;

‘Hope is to leave and

claim a place of my own’

III ADULT

Through shelves

of

papers

Sculpts

creases

across your

skin

They asked you what hope was

Bright screens

reflect

off

blue-light

glasses

You said;

“Hope is to fight to the top”

IV ELDER

Around

baskets of

flowers

an old

rocking

chair

Sweet cake

soaked in

bitter

tea

You asked them what hope was

burnt wood

laid

in black

soot

They said;

Hope is nothing

but

to live through every tomorrow

This recently written poem explores the theme of 'Hope'. "timeline of hope" categorizes life into four stages (emerging, young, adult, elder), and through a second person point of view, shows how these thoughts change overtime.

Summary (the basic meaning)

The first three stages show aggression, 'hope' is to pursue large goals, thus, the majority of your lifetime is spent trying to achieve them.

However, when reaching the elderly stage, ‘hope’ has shrunken from the what it used to be, to the simplest wish of living healthily through every day.

Additional points to share

In the ‘emerging' stage the quote "blazing firewood" I have written,  is used to contrast with the quote  "burnt wood laid in black soot" appearing towards the end of the piece, in the ‘elder’ stage.

From the burning of the wood at the start, to it turning into burnt wood towards the end, it means that the fire has stopped.

What fire? -  This is used to show how age has quenched the fire of ambition that used to live within.

Who is they/them(它/它们)指的是谁?

Throughout the poem, I have incorporated an unnamed character that repeatedly questions you, on what hope is. In the end (elder stage), you become the person asking them the question instead.

The identity of this character may be different for everyone. And it is up to you to decide.

Personally, when writing, I pictured this character as myself.

What is hope to you? Only you know. Because you are your best teacher, the only person that holds the key to all the locked answers
